Frets on Fire!

I got addicted to guitar hero just like everyone else. The list of guitar driven, up-tempo songs, awesome licks, fast notes, fun graphics and the Horrible fun controller rocked! I discovered tons of songs and artists that i had never heard of before. Nat, my best buddy introduced me to the game and i just love it.

There is one thing that kinda didnt rub off well for me. I cant afford to go gaming to a game room everyday and nor is the console/song packs/controller etc. completely worth it after you have nailed pretty much all songs on medium/expert mode.

The next coolest guitar hero sortish clone i discovered a month or so later, again, through my gaming buddy Nat, who works for acclaim games. This neat little web based multi-player is called Rock Free and is a lotta fun. Its not that appealing graphically, but what makes it work is the multi-player modes. You can pick funky avatars to play as and even start your own game room. Each game room can then have players join in, chat , pick and compete by playing a song selected by the owner of the game room. Tons of songs are uploaded everyday by users all over which makes the whole experience truly rewarding. The flipside, takes a long time to load songs and if another player in room is unfortunate enough to suffer a lousy connection, it almost takes forever to come on. Give it a try if you are into the whole multi-player thing, otherwise give it a pass and get ready to bring on Frets on Fire!!

Rockfree is Here :

I was randomly searching for guitar hero like games for the PC one evening and i stumbled upon this Fantastic Open source, Free to download game called Frets on Fire. The Great thing about FOF (as the fans like to call it) is that it has tons of user created mods which look and feel completely like Guitar Hero/Rockband and almost an endless repository of user fretted songs.
The basic Frets on Fire without the MOD is super fun, it has 5 awesome songs to start playing and getting the hang of the controls. Tommy Inkila one of the game creators has played and fretted a rocking guitar driven song called "This Week i've been playing mostly guitar" which imho is one of the best guitar songs i've ever listened to. The basic game is about 30 Megs in size and also has a song editor which can be used to upload famous songs and even create your own custom songs.
The real fun part about the game is that ur desktop keyboard turns into your shiny new 6-string :) . The default key config is the F1 through F5 keys for each string and the ENTER key to strum the notes. It simulates a feel similar to using the GH controller when you turn the keyboard upside down ( too bad the damn keys are too small) .
You can directly start by downloading the Alarian or MFH Mod for FOF to begin rocking with a GH sortof environment.
